What should I know before renting a portable toilet?

Know how many people will use the units and for how long, where units will go and whether a service truck can reach that spot, whether you need accessible units or hand washing, and whether placement on public property needs a permit. With those details, a provider in our network can recommend the right units and service schedule and give you an accurate quote.

Ordering and booking

How far ahead should I book? For a single jobsite unit, a few days is often enough. For events on spring and summer weekends, book several weeks ahead, and earlier for restroom trailers, which are in shorter supply. Urgent needs are covered on our emergency porta potty page.

Who will actually deliver? An independent sanitation provider in our network. Haul & Hygiene coordinates the request; the provider owns the units, sets pricing and issues the rental agreement. Read how it works for the full process.

Is there a minimum rental period? It varies by provider. Some offer single-day rentals; others have weekly or monthly minimums. Ask when you request a quote.

Choosing units

What is the difference between standard and deluxe units? Standard units have a toilet, urinal and sanitizer. Deluxe units often add a sink, mirror or flush. See standard porta potties and event units.

When should I choose a restroom trailer? For weddings, formal events and VIP areas, or extended facility outages where you have power. Trailers have flushing toilets, running water and climate control.

What is a portable toilet trailer? A towable unit with basic stalls for road crews and moving worksites. It is a work unit, not a luxury trailer. See portable toilet trailers.

How many units do I need? It depends on users and hours for events, and on crew size under OSHA rules for construction. Our quantity guide has rule-of-thumb tables and the jobsite ratios.

Placement and delivery

Where should units go? On firm, level ground the service truck can reach, away from windows, food prep areas and drainage paths, but close enough that people will use them. Point doors away from streets and neighbors where possible.

Do I need to be there for delivery? Usually not. Mark the spot clearly, keep it free of vehicles and obstacles, and give the provider an on-site contact.

Can units go on grass? Yes, if the ground is firm and level. Soft or wet ground can be a problem for both the unit and the truck, so mention ground conditions in your request.

Can units be placed on a rooftop or upper floor? On construction sites, some providers offer units with lifting hooks for crane placement. Coordinate any lift in advance.

Permits and rules

Do I need a permit? On private property, usually not, though HOAs may have rules. Placing units on a street, sidewalk or public park often requires a permit, and event permits may require a minimum number of toilets and accessible units. Rules vary by city and county, so confirm locally. Our portable toilet permit guide explains the basics.

What does OSHA require on jobsites? OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c) sets minimum toilet facilities by number of employees. See our OSHA guide.

Do health departments require hand washing? Often, where food is served at events. Check with your local health department.

Accessibility

Do I need an ADA unit? At public events and on worksites with employees or visitors who need one, accessible units are expected. Commonly cited guidance based on the 2010 ADA Standards is that at least 5 percent of clustered portable units, and no fewer than one, be accessible. Local rules may require more.

What makes a unit accessible? Typically level entry, interior turning space, grab bars and a wide door with easy hardware. Features vary by model, so confirm with your provider. Our ADA portable toilet page has more detail.

Servicing, weather and hygiene

How often will my units be serviced? It depends on usage and rental length. Schedules and what happens on each visit are covered in detail on our portable toilet maintenance page.

Do porta potties freeze in winter? They can. Providers may add antifreeze or brine and adjust service schedules; heated units are available from some providers. See our winter rental guide.

What about odor in summer? Shade, regular service and deodorizer keep odor under control. In hot weather, more frequent service helps.

Is sanitizer enough? For casual use it may be. Where food is served or hands get dirty, add hand washing stations with soap and water.

Costs and terms

How much does it cost? We do not publish prices because they vary by market and provider. Unit type, quantity, duration, service frequency, delivery distance and timing, and add-ons drive the quote. See porta potty prices for the full list.

Who is responsible for damage? Terms vary. Many agreements hold the renter responsible for damage beyond normal wear, including vandalism or tipping. Read your agreement and secure units when you can.

Can I extend or end early? Usually yes, with notice to the provider. Minimum periods and fees vary.

Frequently asked questions

Does Haul & Hygiene own the portable toilets?

No. We are a coordination network. Independent providers in our network own the units, deliver and service them, and set their own terms.

Can I mix unit types on one order?

Yes. A common mix is standard or deluxe units, one or more ADA units and hand washing stations. Most providers handle mixed orders routinely.

What should I not put in a portable toilet?

Only human waste and toilet paper. Trash, wipes, diapers, chemicals and cleaning products cause problems for servicing and disposal.

Are portable toilets lit at night?

Many have translucent roofs that help during the day, but not lighting. Some providers offer lit units, and many event organizers add exterior lighting.

How do I get started?

Send your address, dates, user count and placement notes when you call, and a provider in our network will follow up.
