How do I rent a dumpster?
Share your address, project, debris type, and dates. Haul & Hygiene matches you with an independent local hauler, who confirms size, rental window, weight allowance, and price. You prepare the drop spot, the hauler delivers the container, you load it within the window, and then the hauler picks it up and takes the debris to an appropriate facility.

How It Works: dumpster sizes at a glance
| Size | Typical dimensions | Holds about |
|---|---|---|
| 10-yard | ~12 ft L × 8 ft W × 3.5 ft H | 3–4 pickup-truck loads |
| 20-yard | ~22 ft L × 8 ft W × 4.5 ft H | 6–8 pickup-truck loads |
| 30-yard | ~22 ft L × 8 ft W × 6 ft H | 9–12 pickup-truck loads |
- Weight: heavy debris like concrete, dirt or shingles reaches the weight allowance before the container is full, so it usually goes in a smaller container. See dumpster weight limits.
- Permits: a dumpster on your own driveway usually needs no permit; one on a street or sidewalk often does. See dumpster permits.
The rental process from start to finish
Most rentals follow the same seven steps. Timelines and terms vary by provider and location.
- Describe your project
Tell us the address, what you are discarding, approximate volume, where the container can go, and your preferred delivery and pickup dates.
- Get matched with a local hauler
We pass your request to an independent provider in our network that serves your area and handles your debris type.
- Confirm the details
The provider confirms size, rental window, included weight, price, accepted materials, and any site requirements directly with you.
- Prepare the site
Clear the placement area, move vehicles, check overhead clearance, and secure a permit if the container will sit on a public street.
- Receive delivery
The driver sets the container in the agreed spot, often on boards to protect pavement.
- Load the container
Fill it within the rental window, keeping debris level with the top and prohibited items out.
- Schedule pickup
Call or message your provider when you are done. The hauler collects the container and takes debris to a licensed landfill, transfer station, or recycler.
What to have ready before you request a quote
The more detail you provide, the more accurate your quote will be.
- The full delivery address and any gate or access codes
- A description of the debris, including heavy materials like concrete or shingles
- Your best guess at volume, or a list of rooms and large items
- Where the container will sit and how much space is available
- Start date, expected finish date, and any hard deadlines
- Whether you need the container on the street, which may require a permit
What Haul & Hygiene does and what your provider does
Haul & Hygiene is a coordination network. We help you describe the project, connect you with an independent hauler who serves your location, and offer guidance on sizes, placement, and accepted materials. The provider owns the equipment, sets the price and terms, delivers and picks up the container, and handles disposal. Your rental agreement is with the provider. Learn more on our how we work page.
Delivery day: what to expect
Many providers give a delivery window rather than an exact time. The driver backs up to the placement spot, tilts the truck bed, and slides the container off. The process usually takes only a few minutes when access is clear. If you are not home, mark the spot clearly with cones or chalk and leave instructions. If the driver cannot safely place the container, they may call you to discuss alternatives, and some providers charge for a wasted trip.
During the rental
Load steadily from the front of the container toward the door. Cover the box with a tarp when not in use to keep rain out and discourage others from adding trash. If it fills early, ask about a swap. If you need more time, request an extension before the window ends. See how long you can rent a dumpster for typical rental windows.
Pickup and final billing
When you call for pickup, make sure the container is accessible, the door is latched, and nothing is sticking up above the walls. The hauler takes the load to a facility where it is weighed. If your provider bills by weight, the scale ticket determines any overage. Your final invoice may include extra days or special items. How It Works FAQs
How far ahead should I book?
A few days is often enough outside peak season. Book earlier for spring and summer weekends or if your dates are fixed. Some providers offer same-day or next-day delivery.
Do I sign a contract?
Your provider may ask you to accept rental terms. Read them for rules on weight, prohibited items, extensions, and damage.
Can I change my pickup date?
Usually, with notice. Contact your provider as soon as plans change.
Who do I call if there is a problem?
Contact your provider directly for delivery, pickup, and billing questions. You can also reach us through our contact page.
Can I see the container before delivery?
Ask your provider for the exact size and dimensions of the container they plan to send, since specs vary by fleet.
