Fort Collins is the seat of Larimer County and the largest city in Northern Colorado. It lies where the plains meet the foothills, with Horsetooth Reservoir and a ridge of hogbacks to the west and the Cache la Poudre River curving along the north side of town. Interstate 25 runs along the eastern edge, and newer development keeps spreading toward Timnath, Windsor and Wellington.

Colorado State University sits close to the center of town, and its calendar shapes a lot of local activity. Old Town, the historic downtown, is known for brick storefronts, restaurants and a well-known craft brewing scene. Neighborhoods near Old Town and campus include older bungalows and early twentieth-century homes, while south and east Fort Collins hold larger subdivisions from recent decades.

The climate is semi-arid, with sunny days, cold snowy winters, spring wind and summer hailstorms. Trees matter here, too: the emerald ash borer has been found in Fort Collins, and many property owners have been removing or replacing ash trees. The foothills to the west sit in wildfire-prone terrain, so brush clearing is common for homes near the edge of town.
