About service in Rutland

Rutland is the seat of Rutland County and the largest city in southwestern Vermont. It sits in a valley along Otter Creek, with the Green Mountains rising to the east and the Taconic Range to the west. Routes 4 and 7 meet here, linking the city to Killington, the Lakes Region and the New York border. For much of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Rutland and nearby towns such as Proctor and West Rutland were centers of the marble industry, and that history still shows in local buildings, quarries and stonework.

The city's housing is mostly older: Victorian homes, wood-frame two- and three-family houses near downtown, and modest postwar neighborhoods farther out. Many properties have detached garages, narrow side driveways and steep backyards. Renovation, roof work, foreclosure and estate cleanouts, and rental property turnovers make up a large share of local rental demand. Slate roofs are common in the region, and removing one produces heavy debris.

Rutland is also a service hub for the ski economy. Killington and Pico are a short drive east, so contractors here regularly work on condos, lodges and vacation homes in the mountains, where steep roads and deep snow complicate deliveries. In summer, the Vermont State Fair is held at the Rutland fairgrounds, and the Rutland Halloween Parade is a well-known fall tradition.
