Lewiston is one of Maine's largest cities and sits in Androscoggin County on the east bank of the Androscoggin River, directly across from its twin city, Auburn. The Great Falls of the Androscoggin powered the textile mills that built the city in the nineteenth century, and those massive brick mill buildings still line the river and canals downtown. Several have been redeveloped for offices, housing, restaurants and event space. Bates College occupies a leafy campus on the city's east side.

The city's housing reflects its mill history. Downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods are dense with wood-frame multi-family buildings, including triple-deckers and larger tenement-style blocks, many with shared yards and little or no off-street parking. Farther from the center, neighborhoods have single-family homes, capes and ranches on larger lots, and the edges of the city turn rural.

That mix produces steady rental demand: landlords renovating and turning over apartments, owners updating older homes, cleanouts of long-held properties, mill and commercial redevelopment, and routine roof and siding work. Winters are cold and snowy, and the city's hills and narrow streets near downtown complicate placement in snow season.

Each August, Lewiston and Auburn host the Great Falls Balloon Festival, and parks along the river hold summer concerts and community events.
