About service in Davenport

Davenport is the largest city in the Quad Cities, the seat of Scott County and a Mississippi River town through and through. Here the river runs roughly east to west, so Davenport faces south across the water toward Rock Island and Moline in Illinois, and the metro straddles two states with different rules on each side of the bridges.

The river shapes everything. Davenport is well known for keeping its downtown riverfront open rather than building a permanent floodwall, which means high water is a recurring concern; the 2019 flood breached temporary barriers and flooded part of downtown. Riverfront businesses and low-lying neighborhoods have dealt with repeated cleanups, and spring flood season is part of local planning.

Away from the river, the city climbs steep bluffs. Historic neighborhoods such as the Village of East Davenport, McClellan Heights, the Hamburg Historic District and the blocks around Palmer College hold Victorian and early twentieth-century homes, many on hillside lots with steep driveways, retaining walls and narrow streets. North and northwest Davenport flatten out into postwar and newer subdivisions with easier access.

The regional economy leans on manufacturing and agricultural equipment, the Rock Island Arsenal across the river, health care and logistics along Interstates 74 and 80. That mix brings steady industrial and commercial work.
